Balancing work and life can feel like trying to stay upright on a paddleboard through the wake of a passing speedboat on the lake. However, incorporating a few key strategies can make it more like a leisure walk through charming downtown Waconia (minus the construction).
FROM HIGH SCHOOL TO 40s
Congrats to the graduating class of 2024! During this graduation season, I’ve recently reflected on life stages – from high school to my 40s- considering how priorities and balance have changed over time. In high school, life revolved around hanging out with friends, classes, a part-time job, and extracurricular activities. It was an exciting time period of exploration and learning, with family to support me along the way.
In my 40s, the picture looks different. Some elements remain, but responsibilities have expanded to include career, family obligations, and community involvement. The balance is much more complex.
THE 7 F’S FRAMEWORK
In the book, What really Works: Blending the 7 F’s for the Life You Imagine, authors Paul Batz and (Waconia Chamber supporter) Tim Schmidt, write about the 7 F’s: Faith, Family, Finance, Fitness, Friends, Fun and Future. Balance does not have to mean equal distribution amount these areas; rather, it can involve focusing on a blend that needs your attention at different times and stages of life. This interpretation allows for flexibility and acknowledges that some areas may temporarily take precedence over others without a one-size-fits-all solution.
KEYS TO ACHIEVING BALANCE
There are numerous podcasts that I listen to on a regular basis and recently a notion emphasizing that ‘while you can strive to have everything you want in life; you can’t have it all at the same time’ resonated with me. It’s ever evolving, but below are 4 key personal approaches to work-life balance.
1. BETTER RELATIONSHIPS
- Get to Know the Person Behind the Business: Personal connections go beyond professional interactions
- Spend Quality Time: Prioritize time with family, friends and colleagues.
- Emotional Support: In challenging times, seek and offer advice, encouragement, and motivation from your support network.
2. IMPROVED PRODUCTIVITY
- Process and Procedures: Develop clear goals and workflows that improve efficiency.
- Set Priorities and Create a Rhythm: Establishing a routine helps in managing tasks effectively.
- Add Flexibility: Adaptability is key to maintaining productivity while accommodating unforeseen changes.
3. CLARITY
- Define Goals: Know what you truly want. Whether it’s a professional ambition or personal growth, clarity helps in directing efforts.
- Alignment with Values: In our most recent ambassador visits, both business owners shared personal inspirational reflection stories that included a faith-based spiritual guidance that aligned with values to bring clarity.
3. HEALTH
- Physical Health: Maintaining well-being through exercise, diet, and sleep.
- Mental Health: Engage in activities that reduce stress and promote mental clarity.
Focusing on building strong relationships, improving productivity, seeking clarity in goals, and prioritizing health, allows for better balance. Each journey includes different chapters that contain a unique blend. I encourage you to get to know the incredible businesses and resources in our community.
